Somatic Movement classes: ‘Smoother Moving’
What is Somatic Movement?
The purpose of somatic movement education is to enhance human functioning and body-mind integration through movement awareness. Somatic classes improve awareness of the body and are focused on making movement easier. Some well-known forms of Somatic Movement are for example: Feldenkrais, Alexander Technique and Body-Mind Centering.
Somatic Movement at the Haags Yogacentrum (HYC)
The Somatic Movement classes at HYC are based upon the (lesser known) Laban Bartenieff Movement System (LBMS) and Bartenieff Fundamentals. LBMS is a rich and creative movement system used by actors, choreographers and in Dance and Movement Therapy (as well as in: anthropology, computer animation and management consultancy). It allows for observation and analysis of movement and intervention in human movement patterns (repatterning). The Space Harmony part of LBMS focuses on developing more balance with the world around us and more functionality and expression in movement. In short, LBMS is all about developing a healthy, rich and easy movement potential, in harmony with your environment.
Bartenieff Fundamentals are a series of very basic but fundamental exercises, reconnecting the mover to their ‘inner connections’. Irmgard Bartenieff worked from these inner body connections (such as: Head-to-Tail, Left-Right, Core-Limbs and Diagonal). We all move through these ‘fundamental’ connections and movements as we develop our personal motor skills. Growing older we often develop fixed movement patterns and sometimes get stuck in them. Practicing the various basic movements, helps us to move through life with greater ease and relaxation. Our movement pattern becomes richer, more expressive and supple. We will ‘rediscover’ ease of movement.
Why practice Somatic Movement?
Learning alternative ways to move and making use of your inner connections increases your energy, awareness and vitality. You will increase your body awareness by learning how to listen more closely to your body and you will become smoother and richer as a mover. Both are important to keep a healthy balance between exertion and recuperation in daily life.
Who can do Somatic Movement?
In these classes personal experience and making discoveries at your own pace are core. Every single body is different and has different movement preferences. This is respected and accepted in somatic classes. Everyone works in a safe way, within their own boundaries and possibilities. We work with what we have, in a small group, with personal attention. Suitable for anyone, including those with injuries. Prior experience with somatic movement is not necessary. You move all the time.
The class will be taught in English.
